Doctor Stuart Malawer, from the George Mason University is an academic; but the paper highlighted this week from him reads more like an op-ed and is clearly partisan.
However, within the doctor’s passionate warning about how messy the reality of President Trump following up on trade related promises is going to be he makes some interesting observations.
With regard to the progress of disputes with China via the WTO he points out neither the Bush nor the Obama administrations were slouches in this regard. America has had for some time a robust tack dealing with China so can this engagement, in reality, be dialed up further?
He also points out that within Trump’s team the China hawks have gotten prominent coverage but they by no means rule the roost.
The paper concludes noting the last time America had an active protectionist policy was when President Hoover was in the white house who, among other things, led the country into what subsequently came to be known as the Great Depression.
