The Sunday Paper – Submarine Cables and Container Shipments: Two Immediate Risks to the US Economy If China Invades Taiwan

The attack on a gas pipeline in Europe recently reminds there are a lot of assets that run under oceans, and top of them, that are all also vulnerable.

Christine A. McDaniel and Weifeng Zhong of the George Mason University – Mercatus Center, have had a closer look at Taiwan in this regard focusing on undersea data cables and maritime freight.

The cable picture is worrying as the picture here shows.

The freight picture is even more alarming.

The paper is brief and only touches on the potential impact to commerce if a hot war were to develop in the region.

The maps though do their own talking and it’s clear that an outbreak of serious hostilities in the region would have profound and far reaching consequences for the entire world.

The paper in full is here Cables and Containers. Let’s hope this remains just alarmist speculation for the indefinite and foreseeable future.

Happy Sunday.
