Rome collapsed, due to (among other things) climate change, inequality and heavy doses of corruption. The rich West faces some of the same problems. Unlike the Romans though we can do something about climate change, we understand inequality better and we’re not, just yet, overwhelmed by corruption. Trends though are not encouraging.
